Unearthing The Undead 42 - RONALD HAMM

Badge #: 1361

Ron Hamm was a Pittsburgh police officer that appeared in "Night of the Living Dead". He can be seen shooting the ghouls near the farmhouse with his friend Officer Don Barth.

Ron Hamm – A Life of Service, Sportsmanship, and Family Born and raised in the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 9th, 1940 to Francis Charles and Elsie Hamm, Ron Hamm embodied the spirit of the Steel City—a man of quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and deep-rooted values. He spent his entire life in the city he loved, dedicating nearly three decades to public service as a proud member of the Pittsburgh Police Department, where he wore badge #1361 with honor. Ron began his career on the front lines as a street officer, gaining a firsthand understanding of his community’s challenges and needs. After five years of patrolling the neighborhoods, he transitioned into administrative roles, where he served with distinction as Clerk to numerous Inspectors and Police Chiefs. His meticulous attention to detail and steadfast professionalism became hallmarks of his tenure. In his final years before retirement, Ron lent his expertise to the Traffic and City Impound Division, closing out a 29-year career of faithful, dignified service.

Beyond the badge, Ron was a passionate sportsman and community leader. His love for baseball was legendary. In 1969, he coached his Little League team to victory in the prestigious Mayor's Tournament—an achievement that earned the team an unforgettable three-day experience at the Pittsburgh Pirates’ spring training camp in Bradenton, Florida. There, his players rubbed shoulders with legends like Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell, culminating in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sit in the dugout at Forbes Field during a Pirates game.

Ron’s coaching success continued in 1973 when he led his Colt League team to a National Championship, sealing their title in Dayton, Ohio. Whether on the diamond or with a fishing pole in hand, Ron found joy in the simple pleasures of life and shared that joy generously with others.

But above all, Ron was a devoted family man. He poured his heart into raising his sons and cherished every moment spent with his two granddaughters, always cheering them on from the sidelines of life. His was a life of purpose, filled with meaning, laughter, and few, if any, regrets.

Ron Hamm passed away peacefully on January 4, 2020, leaving behind a legacy of service, mentorship, and love that continues to inspire all who knew him.
