Unearthing The Undead 36 - HENRY ROLL

Henry Roll played a ghoul in "Night of the Living Dead".  He can be seen in some of the day for night photos that do not appear in the film.  He also can be seen briefly in the group of ghouls by the gas pump trying to attack Ben.

Not only did Henry appear in "Night of the Living Dead", but also was a zombie in "Dawn of the Dead" and even was an extra in "The Dark Half", playing a photographer, while wearing Thad Beaumonts (Timothy Hutton) coat.

Henry Roll was a quietly influential figure in Pittsburgh's independent film and art scenes. An artist, filmmaker, projectionist, and teacher, Roll brought a distinct perspective to every project he touched. A member of Mensa with an unconventional streak, he was active during the 1960s and '70s, creating a series of experimental films that were shown at Pittsburgh Filmmakers and the Mattress Factory.

Though rarely screened in recent decades, his work resurfaced recently with the inclusion of his short film "...Thing" in the GIANT SCREAM SHOW-where it quickly became an audience favorite.

Roll's ties to the city's film community ran deep. He appeared as an extra in several of George A. Romero's films, animated opening segments for Chiller Theater, and worked as a projectionist at many of Pittsburgh's theaters. He also taught animation at Pittsburgh Filmmakers in its early years, contributing to the foundation of a now-legendary institution.

In addition to his film work, Roll was an accomplished visual artist. His paintings often featured landscapes of downtown Pittsburgh, blending traditional techniques with a love for the city's skyline and industrial character. His interest in technology also found its way into his art: circuit boards and found materials often made their way into his mixed-media pieces, revealing a creative mind drawn to the intersection of the organic and the mechanical.
